Dr. Sergio Farrais Villalba
Assistant Digestive System Physician. Head of the Celiac Disease Unit. H.U. Jiménez Díaz Foundation
“In the last two decades, the concept, diagnosis and management of Celiac Disease has radically changed. It has ceased to be a rare, infrequent disease, with only intestinal manifestations and typical of childhood, to a relatively frequent disease. that affects people of all ages and races, with multiple presentations and that on many occasions represents a diagnostic challenge for health professionals “.
Dr. Sergio Farrais will give a presentation in the auditorium of EXPOWORLDGLUTENFREE entitled: “Celiac disease in adults. Patterns of clinical presentation and challenges in diagnosis”.
Predoctoral student at the University of the Basque Country (UPV / EHU)
Although we know of more than fifty genetic variants involved in the development of celiac disease, we do not yet know how these new variants contribute to the development of the disease, since many of them are located in what we call junk DNA.
Our team, led by Dr. Castellanos-Rubio, has recently described how one of these variants helps increase inflammation of the intestine. In addition, we have seen that gluten has the ability to modify RNA molecules, also contributing to intestinal inflammation. These discoveries open the door to alternative treatments to a gluten-free diet, which we are already evaluating in the laboratory.
